The world of pet foods was changed when veterinary cardiologist published papers proving the link between grain-free diets and a form of heart disease (dilated cardiomyopathy or DCM) in dogs and cats. Unfortunately – a new group formed in the last two years that is sponsored by the pet food industry has been created to “muddy the waters” and convince people it is safe to feed those foods to their pets. It is NOT the opinion of the veterinary cardiologists and specialist that anything has changed. This letter from veterinarians explains why there is no “new information”. We do NOT recommend that clients feed their dogs and cats the grain-free diets. It is despicable that the pet food companies and the few veterinarians they found to promote their nonsense seem to care more about the bottom line of the pet food companies than the health of the pets and the well-being of the owners that love them. So much for the “if you love them like family, feed them like family” line. As veterinarians that love animals and care about all our patients and our own pets, it is disturbing to see a premeditated, well-financed, planned, campaign to lie to the pet owning public. Shame on the companies and the people involved! Please call the office or contact us if you have additional questions or concerns about pet diets.
